Going against the grain
The farmer in our syndicate has to put out feed for the small birds in the winter as part of a scheme. Can he just use wheat in our pheasant feeders?
Marc says: No, you need to use a blend of wheat and small specialist seeds and are meant to feed the mix from December to March.
You can put some in your feeders, but you also have to feed some on the floor in areas identified as suitable – on hard tracks next to hedgerows, for example, or in the middle of wild bird seed plots.
