Best gun type for the hide

I see that you use lots of varied guns when shooting and wondered what mechanism of gun is better for decoying in a hide?

The main downside to the semi-automatic has to be the ejection of empties, which end up stuck in hedges or cover, making it difficult to pack up at the end of the day. One of my favourite gun mechanisms for ease of use in the hide is probably the pump-action. It has all the benefits of the semi-automatic but won’t spit empties as ferociousl­y, making it easy to tidy up. I will often eject the empty into my hand if I only fire one shot or with the last shot in the sequence. They may be a little harder to get used to, but that’s nothing that a little practice won’t help.

Tom says: It is an interestin­g question. I typically choose the day’s gun by the mood I am in. Each gun type has its advantages and disadvanta­ges. An over-and-under or side-by-side can be a little awkward in the hide depending on the setup, as you can often become snarled up in the netting when trying to manoeuvre the gun into a position to break the action. This can be easily overcome by standing up to reload or building the hide with enough room to do it with ease.
