DESCRIPTION

When English gunmakers Henry Atkin, Stephen Grant and Joseph Lang joined forces in 1821, they never would have imagined that their names would still be used as a mark of quality 200 years later.

■ They would also be astounded at the technology that goes into a modern shooting ground. The Hertfordshire estate is at the forefront of the sport’s technical evolution.

■ Fully automated Promatic Claymate traps spread over 16 stands allow experienced shooters to explore a wide selection of Sporting targets. While the unmissable 90ft high tower throws an impressive array of targets designed to imitate a wide range of British game, from driven grouse to high pheasants and springing teal.

■ Technology is important at AGL, but so are traditions. Particularly when it comes to the gunmakers workshop, where Alan Bower, head gunmaker, rebuilds and restores older Grants, Atkins and Langs using traditional methods. Alan and his team build new guns too and offer a wide selection of ready-to-buy rifles and shotguns from various manufacturers.

■ By achieving a perfect balance between the old and new, AGL manages to retain the level of quality that made its namesakes famous, while still continuing to offer a truly 21st century experience. Visitors can easily spend the entire morning freely shooting across the estate, before heading into the well-appointed clubhouse for a spot of lunch and a deep dive into the art of fine English gunmaking.
