Countryside call for lantern ban
Countryside groups have called upon the Government to outlaw sky lanterns. A coalition of 18 rural, environmental and fire organisations have written to Rebecca Pow, the Environment Minister, saying the lack of regulation on this is now “significantly out of date” and needs amending. Tim Bonner, the chief executive of the Countryside Alliance, said the lanterns were incredibly dangerous and “once released, there is no way of knowing where they will end up”. The lanterns have been banned by 152 local authorities across the country but there is no national legislation.
