Choke choice for crows

-

I can never decide what chokes to use when decoying crows. What would you recommend for a 30yd decoying bird?

Tom says: Choke choice is down to personal preference, what suits your gun and what you feel most confident shooting. I have a range of multichoke guns, which allows me to swap depending on the situation. Previously, I avoided open chokes as they didn’t give me the certainty of a good striking pattern. I always used full choke during the summer months for vermin and swapped to half in the winter so that I could shoot steel. Full choke provided me with the confidence to engage crows close or at long ranges. The tight pattern increased the chances of a clean kill or miss and reduced the chance of wounding quarry. This changed when I went onto the aftermarket Kick’s Chokes. I found that I stuck to the half choke year-round. I have a few guns now with fixed half chokes and I find they shoot as well as anything. I have recently picked up an old Remington 1100 from my local gun shop after routing out a great condition gun with a 28in barrel and fixed half choke. I am sure this gun will be great for most situations.
