Patrick’s top tips

-

• Make sure there’s enough distance between your caller and where your quarry might appear from to give you time to respond.

• Streetwise foxes will circle around on the wind before approaching, so stop and think about this before placing the caller out.

• If you’re planning a calling session, be careful where you walk – a fox’s sense of smell is many thousands of times better than that of a human.

• In recent years I’ve avoided handling my caller for several hours before using it to minimise the amount of scent that’s left on it. I don’t know if it helps, but fewer foxes run away these days.

• If the terrain you’re on is causing problems with the caller receiving your remote’s commands, it can help to raise it up off the ground. A fencepost will do but I use a length of fibreglass rod.
