Sporting Gun

First-day form

-

I will be beating with my young dog for the first time this season and wondered if you could give me some tips on how to get ready for our first day in the field?

Frans says: Make sure you are prepared. Get your kit together the evening before and make sure you put your whistle and lead somewhere you will not forget them; I find my boots are a good place. Pack a bowl, clean water, towel and a dog coat. I also like to have a brush with me so that I can get any burrs or grass seed out of the dog’s fur. When you arrive, leave the dog in the car (if it is not too hot) and that way you can go and make all your greetings without worrying about the dog getting up to mischief. During the day try to stick to your off-season training; if your dog gets too excited, pop him back on the lead and be prepared to let him do just a half day. There will be plenty of time and opportunity to let him work all day as he gets fitter and more used to the comings and goings of a shoot day.
