Sporting Gun

Pressing issue

-

How hard should I push down with my cheek when I mount the gun?

Tony says: This depends on a number of factors. If you are Trap shooting, you are likely to lock your cheek firmly to the gun as part of your pre-shot routine, but it’s not a requirement. For Sporting, it is likely that your cheek pressure would be moderate to firm. The key is whatever you are doing that you do it consistently. If your cheek pressure is different, it will affect the shot placement in relation to the barrel. If your head is firmly down your gun could shoot a 50/50 pattern, seeing little or none of the rib. With the same gun, but with moderate cheek pressure, the pattern could be 60/40, seeing more of the rib as your head is higher. If your head is even higher with little or no cheek pressure the same gun could shoot all of the shot above the barrel. Bear in mind that the less pressure you put on your cheek, the more chance you have of your eye moving about either side of the rib. The bottom line is that the gun should fit so you don’t have to accommodate it, and whatever cheek pressure you put on the gun has to be consistent.
