Dementia in dogs

-

My elderly labrador spends most of the day sleeping but I hear him clip-clopping around half the night. Is there anything I can do?

Neil says: Canine cognitive disease (CCD) is similar to human Alzheimer’s. It is estimated to occur in 14% to 35% of the over eight-year-old canine population and is characterised by:

• Confusion

• Disturbance of the normal sleep pattern (day turned into night)

• Anxiety

• Reduced interaction with owners CCD is a degenerative disease, generally considered by owners to be a normal part of the ageing process. There is some evidence to support the addition of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) to the diet, but there are no drugs that are clinically proven to improve cognitive function.

The good news is that ‘cognitive enrichment’ – increased social interaction, regular exercise and introducing new toys and games – actually does help, so wake the old chap up and get him going. Remember that he may also be suffering from painful arthritis and possibly loss of hearing, both of which will negatively impact on his welfare.

And I nearly forgot: if you hear him clip-clopping, get his nails cut. I wish him well.
