Pet project

-

We frequently travel to France with our dogs. This never used to be a problem, as we used a pet passport but now we have to get a certificate from the vet. Is there any way around this?

David says: This is one of the most stupid things introduced by Brexit and it’s difficult to avoid the conclusion it was done just to annoy British pet owners. It used to be the case that you got a UK pet passport from your local vet and used it to travel both ways. Simple. Since Brexit the EU does not recognise UK (other than Northern Ireland) pet passports so you have to go through a long and expensive rigmarole to get a travel document from your own vet to get travel the EU. However, the UK recognises EU pet passports so if you have one of those you can travel both ways. Most French (and those from other EU countries) vets can issue you with an EU pet passport, which involves a microchip, subject to the dog being revaccinated against rabies. We had to do this with one of ours when his chip failed. It takes three weeks before the passport is valid.
