That’s your Lotte

-

Andrea was taking the dogs for their usual wander only for Lotte to stop in her tracks and head off into the woods. Unusually, Bess, our chocolate lab, joined her. She is of a certain age and her interest is normally sleeping, eating or pottering around the garden. However, once the tinker’s yipping started the game was on. Andrea gave the whistle and Bess, being a well-behaved dog, sauntered back.

Lotte? Well, she did come back after a while, and it wasn’t because of the whistle. Andrea had heard a crashing through the undergrowth and coming towards her. I’m sure Lotte, having realised that she was close to Andrea on her return chase, decided there was the possibility of a treat in the offing. She pretended good behaviour and has always received a treat when she asks to go out and returns to the call. I say ‘asks’ but it is usually her hurling herself at the door, resulting in a crash that can’t be missed.

Recently, during a downpour, Lotte tried to break the door down but when it was opened she popped her head out, did not like what she saw and came straight back to sit by the treat bin. She does make me laugh. She is a wily little thing and if you could measure a dog’s IQ, hers would be at the high end of the scale. We will have to continue to watch her.
