Calls of the wildfowler
Do calls work? I have been trying to master them but can’t seem to get it right.
Tom says: Calls are a great tool in any wildfowler’s arsenal. I am a big believer in the effectiveness of calls, but this comes with practice and an understanding of when to use them. They will not work all the time, but they have helped to tip the odds in my favour on plenty of occasions. I have a range of calls that I will swap and change depending on the situation, and I don’t carry a full lanyard all the time. I can just about get most goose calls out of the ones I own, but I would advise using the specific call for a particular species. When it comes to ducks, a mallard call can be a good go-to for a lot of situations, but it is worth getting competent with a wigeon whistle and even a teal call if you are shooting those species regularly. Keep practising and utilise the numerous online videos that will help you master the various calls.
