Use a lead from the get-go

I am planning to take my new dog out picking-up with my older dog this coming season, but during training both go for a retrieve when I tell them to “fetch it”. How can I stop this?

Fran says: When I start working two dogs together, I always keep the younger dog on the lead because that way I can prevent it from running-in when I send the other dog. However, the key to this exercise is getting the dogs used to being sent by their names. This is also useful if you plan to compete with your dogs at a later stage. Start off by using the release command: “Fido, get out”. As they get conditioned to this command, drop the “get out”. Practice this before heading out into the shooting field.
