Sporting Gun

Old testament

-

I am trying to get into wildfowling. Do I need to buy a new semi-auto or will some of the older models be fine for the job?

Tom says: I do not have a single expensive wildfowling gun in my collection. I am a big fan of the older guns as I like how they feel and look compared with some of the newer guns on the market. There are some practical aspects to purchasing a new gun that is made for the job. Manufacturers have made much progress in reliability, recoil absorption and general robustness to the elements. The newer guns can typically handle any cartridge, too, compared with my older guns that are limited to 2¾in, 3in and some 3½in chambers. If you wish to go down the route of an older gun then I would say to buy a good brand and shop around to find the best-condition gun you can find; there are plenty of good bargains out there and guns with a lot more life left in them.
