Full metal bracket
The ProHunt Trail Camera is similar to its competitors, finds Tom Cackett, until you come to position it
Trail cameras are an invaluable tool for deerstalkers. I use them throughout the year to survey all four of the deer species I come across on my patch. When I head out to retrieve a camera I’m always filled with two feelings: excitement and dread. While I’m excited to see what my trail cameras might have picked up, I’m also nervous that someone else will have discovered one of my prized cameras and decided to take it home with them. Luckily, a theft doesn’t happen often but when it does it’s painful – not only have you lost out on any potential photographs but you’ve also lost a piece of equipment that’s worth a chunk of money.
I was therefore excited when I was contacted by Treesco, the UK distributor for the new ProHunt trail camera from VerneyCarron. Usually, I’m not that fussed about new trail cameras as they tend to be much of a muchness, but the ProHunt promised something different. On the face of it, the ProHunt is similar to most of its competitors – it has a 20 megapixel camera, it will take photos and record video, it uses a standard SD card and is waterproof. Nothing unusual there. Where things do get interesting is with the mounting system.
Mounting points
The ProHunt camera has the usual rear-facing mounting points for straps, cords or bungee ropes. It also comes supplied with a metal bracket that slides inside one of the mounting points creating a metal anchor to which you can attach a padlock, chain or steel cord, so no one can steal your precious camera.
The metal bracket is cleverly designed so that when it is in place it prevents access to the SD card, again preventing it from being stolen. This is a simple addition and seems quite effective. My only concern is that the metal bracket still attaches to the camera through plastic mounting points, so if someone was really determined to steal the camera it wouldn’t take much to break the plastic mounting points and free it from
