Nature recovery views sought
There is a week left to submit your views on Defra’s Nature Recovery Green Paper. The paper details the Government’s ambitions to restore nature and halt the decline in species abundance by 2030.
BASC said that shooting takes place over two-thirds of all rural land in the UK and plays a significant role in local and landscape-scale conservation efforts. As such, it said it was participating fully in Defra’s consultations.
The centrepiece of the Green Paper is a consolidation of the legal framework relating to designated sites and species protection. BASC said it was, in effect, an exploration into how best to disentangle the layers of regulation that have built up since the first designation was made in 1949.
Defra said that it wants to “create a system which better reflects the latest science and the impending impacts of climate change, which better reflects our domestic species and habitats, and which will help us achieve our significant goals to recover nature”.
The consultation closes on 11 May. To give your views, visit consult.defra.gov.uk
