Another wild bunch

Sporting Shooter - - Readers’ Letters -

It is great to read the new series from Alex Hatton and I am looking forward to future instalments. Some friends and I recently had the opportunity to take on shooting rights on some local land that has been shot over in the past. We don’t wish to create a driven shoot per se; our main aim is to have somewhere that we can go and spend time in the field together, working our dogs and hopefully returning with something for the pot. In the spirit of Rupert Butler and his adventures!

We have a small wood, a stream bounding one edge and some marshy ground. We are keen conservationists and want to encourage a good mix of game from rabbits and hares to duck and woodcock, as well as a few pheasants that sneak in from a neighbouring shoot.

For me, this is the essence of our sport – working to help make the countryside appealing for wildlife, and harvesting a little wild meat in return.
