Matthew’s late strike as Egham top table

Staines Informer - - SPORT -

IT was tough and it was tight at the Runnymede Stadium on Saturday, but in the end determined Egham grabbed a deserved 1-0 victory over Chalfont St Peter to put them on top of the Evo-Stik Division 1 Central table.

Sarnies’ ace marksman Brendan Matthew grabbed the 76th-minute winner to put them two points clear of Royston Town and St Ives Town, with AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Aylesbury and Chalfont St Peter all just another point behind.

It was keenly fought from the first whistle, with Reece Yorke, Matthew and Jerome Ecclestone all going close for Egham int he second half.

But Egham were finally rewarded when Mitchell Gutteridge broke down the left and set up a chance with a square pass to Matthew who took full advantage with an imperious strike of his left boot.

This victory will give Egham confidence ahead of Saturday’s next test against Frome Town in the FA Trophy first qualifying round.
