ASHFORD’S outdoor season swung into action with a number of friendly matches – with wins against Esher and Isleworth the highlights – and now the real business is underway.

A Thames Valley League contest against Cambridge Park – two triples matches – started the ball rolling, with Ashford squeaking home.

Ivor Houchen, Keith Robinson and Bill Moody won by four shots on home soil while Phil Davey, Mick Delaney and Matt Larman lost by one. Away from home, Jeff Goldsmith, Cliff Tanner and Ashley Tanner lost 21-17 and Ken Mann, Ken Phull and Rob Hackwell triumphed by the same score, giving Ashford a narrow overall victory.

In the London & Southern Fours, Ashford lost to North Sheen with Delaney, Robinson, Moody and Larman going down by five, while Terry Law, Dave Law, Ashley Tanner and Rob Hackwell drew 17-17.

The Fordbridge League finals day 2015, postponed from last season, saw Ashley Tanner take the Singles crown with a 21-15 win over Garry Taylor of Staines.

Tanner completed a second success when he and Wendy Bayley succeeded in the Mixed Pairs 28-7, against Sheila and John Collins of Fordbridge Park.

Meanwhile, Ashford are honoured to have within their ranks two Middlesex County Presidents this coming season, namely Liz Dutton and Ron Searle.

They have busy schedules, playing county games at home and in various parts of the UK. Ashford will host six county-related matches, the first next Thursday (May 26) – the Middlesex Ladies Benevolent Day (2pm).

This will be followed on Sunday June 5 by the Middlesex Ladies two-wood competition, with the first men’s event scheduled for Wednesday June 29, when Middlesex take on Hampshire.
