Canadian exhibitor Hazel Elmslie made history recently at the CAPEX 22 exhibition held in Toronto in June, being the only exhibitor who also competed at CAPEX 78. As it was in 1978, her focus was on Spanish philately with a single-frame postal history exhibit entitled ‘The Rueda de Carreta (Cartwheel) Cancellation of Spain’. Hazel received a special prize from the virtual exhibition in Guadalajara Mexico, Expojafil 2021 which was presented to her at CAPEX 22 by Jaime Benavides, the commissioner for Mexico. The winners at the CAPEX 22 one-frame exhibition have also now been revealed. The Grand Prix de Toronto, for best overall one-frame exhibit, was awarded to Damian Läge (Switzerland) for ‘The Pigeon Mail of Great Barrier Island – stage setting for the first airmail stamps of the world’. The Grand Prix Americas went to Chip Gliedman (USA) with ‘Mail Routes of Rupert’s Land, British North America’; and the Grand Prix National was won by David Hobden (Canada) for ‘Canadian Mails and Dispatches of the War of 1812’.
The HELVETIA 2022 winners were announced during the palmares dinner on the Saturday evening of the event, at the Palazzo dei Congressi. The World Stamp Champion was Adriano Bergamini (Switzerland), with his exhibit ‘Postal relations between Ticino (Switzerland) and foreign countries before the UPU’; the first WSC runner-up was Walter Britz (Uruguay) with ‘Uruguay: Early Issues of the XIX Century (1856-1862)’; and second runner up: Vittorio Morani (Italy), ‘Tuscany 1836 to GPU (up to 30 June 1875): Letter mail in, from and to Tuscany: routes, rates and charges’. Grand Prix International was awarded to UK collector Simon Martin-redman for ‘Sarawak – The first forty years 1858-1898’ and the UK’S Joseph Hackmey won the Grand Prix National for his exhibit on ‘Classic Switzerland’.
At the Swedish Philatelic Federation Congress, held in Täby on 14 May, the Strandell Medal was awarded to three recipients, as earlier award ceremonies were postponed due to the pandemic. Strandellmedalj 51 was awarded to regular Stamp Collector writer Christer Brunström, who was involved in the management team of practically every Hallfrim exhibition as well as of Stockholmia 2019. Strandellmedalj 52 went to Kjell Nilsson, whose work in postal history of the 1920 onwards has found new areas and inspired others. Finally the Strandellmedalj 53 award went to Jan-olof Ljungh, chairman of Ringström’s Museum of Philately, who has made the collections available digitally.
