CRAWFORD MEDAL SHORTLIST REVEALED

After receiving more than thirty nomination­s, the Royal Philatelic Society London has unveiled the short list for the Crawford Medal, the award given to outstandin­g philatelic books published during 2021 and 2022.

The short list of seven consists of: Portuguese India: postal history and the first issues from the ‘natives’ to 1900 by Luis Barreiros, Luis & Eduardo Barreiros; Postal stationery of Denmark by Lars Engelbrech­t; Stamp Taxes in Nevada, 4 volumes by Michael Mahler; Postal routes to the Dutch Possession­s in West Africa, West Indies and Suriname 1652 to 1919: a guide to Dutch Maritime Mail by S Påhlman; The British South Africa Company King George V Admiral Stamps by D Spivack & S Reah-johnson; Rhodesian philately to 1924: the British South Africa Company period by Briantrott­er, Colin Hoffman & Patrick Flanagan; and The inks of De La Rue & Co by Peter Young.

The Crawford Medal is a silver-gilt medal awarded for the most valuable and original contributi­on to the study and knowledge of philately published in book form during the relevant period. This Medal is open to world-wide competitio­n and has been awarded by the Society on 89 occasions since the first award in 1920.

The medal is named after James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford, who by the time of his death in 1913 had amassed the greatest philatelic library of his time. The library was bequeathed in its entirety to the British Museum and is today held at the British Library in London.

The medal will be awarded at the end of the 2nd annual Crawford Festival which will take place on 27 and 28 June 2022 at 15 Abchurch Lane, London EC4N 7BW, the home of the RPSL.
