Welcome to Stamp Collector
INCORPORATING COIN COLLECTOR
I’d like to introduce myself as the new editor of Stamp Collector and to thank Matt and the rest of the team for making me feel so welcome. After 17 years as editor, Matt is going to be a tough act to follow, but luckily, he is still going to be around for help and advice. I’d also like to thank all the contributors for sharing their knowledge during this time of transition. What fascinates me about stamps are the stories they tell and what their design and production reveal about the history of the times in which they were produced. With a background in archaeology and history of architecture, I am particularly interested in stamps featuring these subjects. One of the new issues highlighted in this edition of is one marking the 200th anniversary of the Brazilian Senate, which illustrates the different buildings used by this important legislative institution over the last 200 years. In just one small miniature sheet, three completely different buildings are depicted, including one partly reused from an exhibit at the St Louis World’s Fair in 1904 and one that was conceived as part of a new capital city for Brazil in the mid-20th century. I am currently researching war memorials on stamps and am enjoying discovering the different structures that have been featured on these issues over the years. In his last editorial for the magazine, Matt highlighted the friendly nature of the stamp community. I would definitely agree with him, having received invaluable help and advice from some amazing people in the stamp community over the years. All these people are united by their passion, knowledge and expertise, as well as their generosity in sharing it with others. In my new role as editor of Stamp Collector, I am looking forward to extending my knowledge and building my collection. I also can’t wait to explore both hobbies in future issues. Please do get in touch if there are any topics you would particularly like to see covered.
