Army cadets enjoy a summer camp on Salisbury Plain
AN exhilarating summer camp was completed by cadets from Aldershot, Farnborough and Cove on Salisbury Plain.
The camp, which was the result of months of planning, allows members of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force the chance to put into practice the training they have received throughout the year.
Running from August 9 to 16, the highlight for many was a flight in a Merlin Mark 3 helicopter during the fieldcraft exercise, arranged by Aldershot A Company second in command Captain Spencer Drain.
During the two-week camp in Westdown, more than 600 cadets and instructors from detachments across the county endured rain showers and challenging training.
Sophie McDonnell, 13, from Farnborough detachment, said: “The helicopter was really good, I would never have got to do this if I had been at home.”
The cadets also took part in military training and an adventure training day, which included a climbing tower, clay pigeon shooting, archery and a challenging mountain bike course.
Cadet Corporal Stuart Gainsford from Aldershot detachment, who has been a cadet for five years, said: “This is my last annual camp and it has been the highlight of my time in the ACF.”
The camp ended with a drill competition followed by a final parade where cadet Corporals Frankie Farmer, 16, and Megan Clement, 17, both senior cadets at Aldershot detachment, received medals for completing the 100-mile Nijmegen Marches in July as part of a team of cadets from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Corporal Curtis Izard, 17, was presented with a BTEC level 2 extended certificate in public services.
This was followed by a fun afternoon including inflatables and a visit from the army’s south east outreach team.
The Army Cadet Force is a Ministry of Defences-ponsored youth organisation open to all young people in Year 8 and above.
It is seeking more adult leaders, with or without military experience.
