SURREY Heath will once again be blowing its trumpet about the borough’s musical heritage with the return of the Century of Sound Festival.
Following a successful debut, the festival is back from September 4- 11 with a series of performances and activities encouraging residents to tune into the rich stream of music talent the area has produced for more than 100 years.
Its ambassador is local entrepreneur Chris Herbert, founder of ten10Management, who helped shape the pop music scene of the 90s by creating chart- topping bands such Spice Girls and Five.
The performances include a jazz day at the Brickmakers Arms in Windlesham on September 4, a music quiz at The Bear in Camberley on September 5, an open mic night at the White Hart in Frimley on September 7 and a concert at the Three Mariners in Bagshot on September 9.
Also on the line- up is a reminiscence session for older people at the Windle Valley day centre in Bagshot on September 7, a music showcase called Over the Moon at Windlesham Theatre on September 9.
Tutors from the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford will be at The Mall Camberley on Saturday, September 10 from 11am4pm, offering beginners’ lessons in singing and playing guitar, piano, drums and DJ turntables.
In an event unique to the Century of Sound Festival, there will be a celebration of the work of 19th and 20th Century composer and suffragette, Ethel Smyth, at her childhood home, Frimhurst, in Frimley Green on Sunday, September 11.
This will feature piano recitals, songs and a lecture focusing on her life and work, plus a tour of the building owned by anti- poverty charity ATD Fourth World amd used as a refuge for families in need.
