Over The Moon with mu­sic fes­ti­val line up

SUR­REY Heath will once again be blow­ing its trum­pet about the bor­ough’s mu­si­cal her­itage with the re­turn of the Cen­tury of Sound Fes­ti­val.

Fol­low­ing a suc­cess­ful de­but, the fes­ti­val is back from Septem­ber 4- 11 with a se­ries of per­for­mances and ac­tiv­i­ties en­cour­ag­ing res­i­dents to tune into the rich stream of mu­sic tal­ent the area has pro­duced for more than 100 years.

Its am­bas­sador is lo­cal en­tre­pre­neur Chris Her­bert, founder of ten10Man­age­ment, who helped shape the pop mu­sic scene of the 90s by cre­at­ing chart- top­ping bands such Spice Girls and Five.

The per­for­mances in­clude a jazz day at the Brick­mak­ers Arms in Windle­sham on Septem­ber 4, a mu­sic quiz at The Bear in Cam­ber­ley on Septem­ber 5, an open mic night at the White Hart in Frim­ley on Septem­ber 7 and a con­cert at the Three Mariners in Bagshot on Septem­ber 9.

Also on the line- up is a rem­i­nis­cence ses­sion for older peo­ple at the Win­dle Val­ley day cen­tre in Bagshot on Septem­ber 7, a mu­sic show­case called Over the Moon at Windle­sham The­atre on Septem­ber 9.

Tu­tors from the Academy of Con­tem­po­rary Mu­sic in Guild­ford will be at The Mall Cam­ber­ley on Satur­day, Septem­ber 10 from 11am4pm, of­fer­ing be­gin­ners’ lessons in singing and play­ing gui­tar, pi­ano, drums and DJ turnta­bles.

In an event unique to the Cen­tury of Sound Fes­ti­val, there will be a cel­e­bra­tion of the work of 19th and 20th Cen­tury com­poser and suf­fragette, Ethel Smyth, at her child­hood home, Frimhurst, in Frim­ley Green on Sun­day, Septem­ber 11.

This will fea­ture pi­ano recitals, songs and a lec­ture fo­cus­ing on her life and work, plus a tour of the build­ing owned by anti- poverty char­ity ATD Fourth World amd used as a refuge for fam­i­lies in need.

Sur­rey Heath’s 2016 Cen­tury of Sound Fes­ti­val in­cludes a cel­e­bra­tion of the life and work of com­poser and suf­fragette Dame Ethel Mary Smyth, who spent most of her life liv­ing at Frimhurst in Frim­ley Green.
