W2 Yarmouth (B110): Restoration of the last surviving LBSCR ‘E1’ 0‑6‑0T has begun in a low‑key way at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, with smaller parts removed for assessment. This has included the stripping and cleaning of the connecting rods, revealing them to be the 1877 originals, of Stroudley design and bearing the engine’s first number of 110. 1420: Last steamed on April 10 2006, the South Devon Railway’s ‘14XX’ 0‑4‑2T has been taken into the workshops for its heavy overhaul, which will be undertaken alongside ‘1366’ 0‑6‑0PT No. 1369 after the latter’s boiler certificate expires in May. 4141: Failed with firebox problems in September 2015, the Epping Ongar Railway’s ‘Large Prairie’ has been sent to Locomotive Maintenance Services of Loughborough for repairs in order to gain a new ten‑year boiler certificate. 4253: In preparation for re‑wheeling, the axleboxes have been trial‑fitted to the frames and axle journals of the ex‑Barry 2‑8‑0T at the Kent & East Sussex Railway. 4936: Kinlet Hall’s boiler tubes and backplate have been removed at Tyseley. 5619: BR black livery has been applied to the Collett ‘56XX’ 0‑6‑2T at the Midland Railway ‑ Butterley. The repaint was sponsored by 30742 Charters. 5786 (L92): While on hire to the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway last year, the South Devon Railway‑based ‘57XX’ 0‑6‑0PT sustained a broken firebox stay, necessitating its replacement on the CPRR’s festive trains by No. 1369. Inspection back at Buckfastleigh revealed ‘necking’ of a number of stays (thinning immediately adjacent to the firebox sheet), forcing the engine’s withdrawal for a re‑staying programme. Its boiler has been lifted for the work to be undertaken, with the aim of returning it to service in August. 6024: King Edward I has had its new cylinders fitted at the West Somerset Railway, the castings being of reduced width to increase the locomotive’s main line route availability. The rear dragbox has also been replaced, while the 4‑6‑0’s driving wheels have been sent for tyre turning at Tyseley, and the boiler is under overhaul at Riley & Son (E) Ltd. 6960: Raveningham Hall’s tender, and that of SDJR ‘7F’ 2‑8‑0 No. 53808, were sent from the West Somerset Railway to First Great Western’s Bristol St Philips Marsh depot in late February to have their tyres turned. 30075 (JZ No. 62.669): Project 62’s Yugoslavian ‘USA’ 0‑6‑0T is having its boiler tubes and cab fittings removed at Shillingstone, in readiness for lifting the boiler in the spring and sending it away to a contractor for its ‘ten‑yearly’ overhaul. Project 62 shares are still being sold to raise funds ‑ see www.project62.supanet.com 30928 (928): While the heavy repair of Stowe’s boiler continues at the Bluebell Railway with the fitting of the newly pressed firebox backplate, preparations are being made to lift the ‘Schools’ 4‑4‑0’s frames from the wheels, and parts have been delivered for a new ashpan. 31027: The driving wheels of the SECR ‘P’ 0‑6‑0T have been needle‑gunned and painted in undercoat at the Bluebell Railway, prior to a topcoat of the lined Southern Railway Maunsell‑era green in which the locomotive is to be restored. It is estimated that £27,000 is needed to complete its ‘rolling chassis’, including tyre turning, machining of the new cylinder block, and potentially new frame plates (SR464). Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/Project27 34105: The smokebox of ‘West Country’ 4‑6‑2 Swanage has been mounted on the frames at the Mid‑ Hants Railway, and the steam reversing gear is being stripped for overhaul. 41298: A ‘make do and mend’ BR repair from the end of Southern Region steam in 1967 temporarily stopped the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s Ivatt 2‑6‑2T nearly 50 years later. Having returned to service in March last year and covered 6,536 miles since, it was taken into the workshop at Havenstreet during the winter for a full valve and piston examination, after fragments of piston valve ring were found to be jamming the cylinder drain cocks. Inspection revealed that with spares in short supply in the last months of steam, the ‘2MT’ had been fitted with valve rings of an incorrect size. 44123: A new rear dragbox is being constructed for the ex‑Barry ‘4F’ 0‑6‑0 by the London Midland Society at the Avon Valley Railway. A new smokebox door has also been made, and parts are being produced for a new tender tank. 44901: Initial cleaning work and stripping of parts has commenced on the frames of the ex‑Barry ‘Black Five’ 4‑6‑0. Having arrived

at the Vale of Berkeley Railway’s Sharpness Docks headquarters in December 2015, the former ‘Barry Ten’ locomotive is to be moved to another private storage facility nearby, as the space is needed for an LMS brake van and iron ore wagon. 45025: Following the replacement of the front end of the frames on the ‘Black Five’ at the Strathspey Railway, the right-hand cylinder has been trialfitted. A new blastpipe has been cast, the crossheads whitemetalled, and the steam brake cylinder reassembled on the dragbox. 45337: 26B Railway Company’s ‘Black Five’ is to remain a resident of the Llangollen Railway for the remaining three years of its boiler certificate, which expires at the end of 2020. Financial Director Phil Humphreys said that the locomotive will not be making long-term visits elsewhere in that time, but the group is “open to offers” to hire it for gala weekends. 47327: Out of ticket since 2015, this LMS ‘Jinty’ 0-6-0T has received a cosmetic restoration in Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Prussian Blue as No. 23, for display in the Matthew Kirtley Museum at the Midland Railway - Butterley. 47357: The boiler of this Butterley-based ‘Jinty’ has been sent to the North Norfolk Railway for a contract overhaul, while its axleboxes have been whitemetalled and machined at the Great Central Railway. It is hoped that the engine will return to steam as the mainstay of MR-B services in 2018. Midland Railway Trust Development Officer Alan Calladine said: “This is the first part of a scheme to bring several locomotives back into traffic, with its sister No. 47445 making steady progress for the first time in preservation [see below]. We will then have a chance to look at others, including Caprotti-geared ‘Standard Five’ No. 73129, which needs extensive boiler repairs.” 47445: Quotes are being sought for the machining of the slidebars for the ex-National Coal Board ‘Jinty’ at Butterley, last steamed in 1970. This will allow the axlebox horn guides to be set, after which the axleboxes themselves will be whitemetalled and machined. 48518: As its firebox nears completion at Crewe for ‘County’ No. 1014 (see New-Build News, page 21), the boiler barrel of the Doncaster-built ‘8F’ from the ‘Barry Ten’ has also found a new use. Churnet Valley Railway Operations Manager Greg Wilson has acquired it to replace the barrel of his own ex-Barry ‘8F’ No. 48173, which is in a worse condition. 53808: See No. 6960. 53809: A new copper main steam pipe has been obtained for the SDJR ‘7F’ 2-8-0, which is expected to return to service on the West Somerset Railway in mid-April. 60007: Sir Nigel Gresley’s driving wheels have had new tyres fitted at the South Devon Railway, while at the National Railway Museum, the mechanical lubricators and air pump are the latest parts to receive attention, and the sand pipes are being reassembled. 65462 (564): The Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society’s GER ‘Y14’ (LNER ‘J15’) underwent a re-tube at Weybourne works over the winter - a job not done during its recent heavy overhaul between 2013 and 2015, as the boiler inspector gave permission for the tubes to stay in for a further two years. The 0-6-0 was expected to be back in service by the time this issue goes on sale. 69621: Last steamed at the Churnet Valley Railway in April 2015, the East Anglian Railway Museum’s ‘N7’ 0-6-2T has received a cosmetic restoration in BR lined black for display in Platform 4 at Chappel & Wakes Colne. Great Eastern Railway blue was considered, but it would not have been authentic for the engine, which emerged from Stratford Works under LNER auspices in 1924. A legacy of £115,000, specifically for the ‘N7’, has been received and ringfenced for its overhaul - but EARM Chairman Peter Martin said: “There are no current plans to undertake major work until a sufficient time window and other resources become available. “A further review will take place in two or three years’ time, when it is anticipated that other on-site developments will be suitably advanced, with the construction of a new restoration facility, and enhanced display and exhibition areas. “The current work in progress is centred on Bagnall 0-6-0ST Lamport No. 3 (Works No. 2670 of 1942) which is undergoing major boiler work, including the replacement of the inner firebox. The priority for the small team of engineering volunteers is the completion of the ‘ten-yearly’ overhaul of ‘Thomas’ (converted RSH 0-6-0ST No. 54, Works No. 7031 of 1941) in time for the forthcoming season.”

ON THE WAY BACK…

VoR No. 7 (Owain Glyndw^ r): With the Vale of Rheidol Railway 2-6-2T at the ‘rolling chassis’ stage, the boiler is awaiting the fitting of a new inner firebox and a re-tube. New tanks have been assembled and are ready for riveting, while material has been ordered for the new cab and bunker. VoR No. 8 (Llywelyn): Withdrawn from traffic in October 2016, this 2-6-2T has received a rapid ‘ten-yearly’ overhaul, including a full boiler re-tube. It was due to steam for the first time in mid-March, before going into the paintshop for the application of GWR livery to match No. 9 (1213). It is allocated to services from April 7 onwards, and on April 11 it is planned to run Nos. 8 and 1213 together. 1340: Work on the fasttrack overhaul of the Great Western Society’s little 0-4-0ST Trojan has begun at Locomotive Services Ltd’s new Loughborough premises. 4953: Overhaul of Pitchford Hall at Locomotive Maintenance Services, Loughborough is nearing the stage of reassembly. No precise date has been put on the 4-6-0’s return to service at the Epping Ongar Railway. 5526: A fire was lit on the grate of this ‘Small Prairie’ on March 1, its first since March 2012, and the boiler was expected to be back in the frames by mid-March. A return to service by May 9 is the aim, to fill the gap created by the withdrawal of ‘1366’ 0-6-0PT No. 1369 for overhaul (see panel). 7029: With Clun Castle in the last stages of its overhaul, work is progressing at Tyseley as and when other contracts allow. It is hoped to have it in steam for the open weekend on June 24/25. 30070 (DS238): Longmoor Military Railway blue paint is being applied to the Kent & East Sussex Railway’s ‘USA’ 0-6-0T, following the completion of boiler lagging and cladding, while the tanks have returned from shotblasting and are ready for fitting. The locomotive is expected to enter service in April, in the guise of the LMR’s example No. WD300 Major-General Frank S. Ross. 30825: The pistons have been machined for the Essex Locomotive Society’s ‘S15’ 4-6-0 at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, although its overhaul is “on the back burner” pending the completion of ‘Schools’ 4-4-0 Repton (see below). 30926 (926): Repton’s boiler is now the right way up, with its tubes and stays being fitted, and it is expected to be refitted to the almostcomplete ‘bottom end’ in mid-April. 31065 (65): Reassembly of the now-unique ‘O1’ 0-6-0 continues at the Bluebell Railway, with the smokebox and ashpan made. The second stage of painting was about to commence in early March. 35018: ‘Merchant Navy’ British India Line - historically significant as the first member of the class to be rebuilt in 1956 - has been outshopped at Carnforth in non-authentic black livery. Name and numberplates are still to be fitted. 35028: Clan Line’s boiler has passed its hydraulic and out-of-frames steam tests at LNWR Crewe. Its middle connecting rod has been refitted following the completion of repairs to the big end, while the injectors and pipework for the cylinder drains are also back in place. Crewe is aiming to outshop the ‘Merchant Navy’ in April, in order to begin the overhaul of ‘A2’ No. 60532 Blue Peter in earnest. 41313: A revised completion date in May or June is now anticipated for Ivatt ‘2MT’ 2-6-2T No. 41313 at the East Somerset Railway. Undergoing a contract restoration from Barry scrapyard condition for the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, the locomotive was originally scheduled to steam again in February - but was delayed when two consecutive contractors did not carry out the tapping of the holes for its superheater flue tubes as expected. A third contractor, Riley & Son (E) Ltd, was engaged to do the job, allowing the re-tubing of the boiler to go ahead, with the flues fitted in mid-March. The hold-up means that the engine will not be ready to make its intended debut during the ESR’s steam gala of April 29/30, at which the line-up will now comprise resident ‘56XX’ 0-6-2T No. 5637 and ‘2MT’ 2-6-0 No. 46447. However, No. 41313 will be on display during the gala, and a formal launch event is planned to

mark its return to steam. The locomotive’s bottom end is complete, with all the motion fitted, including new return cranks and eccentric rods. Boiler cladding is being trial-fitted, and will then be painted ready to go back on as soon as steam testing is carried out. Like Cranmore’s previous Ivatt restoration No. 46447 - the cladding has been laser-cut from 3D CAD profiles for greater accuracy. 45428: The boiler of the NYMR’s ‘Black Five’ has been de-tubed and had a number of stays removed, to permit repairs to cracking around the stay holes in the copper inner firebox. In parallel, the bottom end is receiving attention to its axleboxes, in particular to correct a slight misalignment on the rear axle. The locomotive’s tender remains in traffic behind No. 44806, while the latter’s own is completed. 45596: Bahamas’ tender is virtually complete at Ingrow West and ready to be taken to Tyseley, where the ‘Jubilee’s’ boiler is having its firebox end flue holes tapped, ready for the machining of the bottle ends of the flue tubes. Supply problems have held up the fitting of the new crown stays and riveting of the new front boiler ring. Refurbishment of the locomotive’s Mk 2 support coach is about to begin at Nemesis Rail of Burton-on-Trent. 55189 (419): Three of the eccentric straps for the Caledonian Railway 0-4-4T were ready to fit at Bo’ness in early March, with one still to be machined, after which new piston rings will be made. The left-hand big end bearing had also been fitted, with machining of the right-hand one in progress. Repairs to the ashpan were nearing completion, with production of a new smokebox wrapper to follow. Gloss painting of the cab and bunker, in CR blue livery, has commenced. 57566 (828): Having had their new tyres fitted by Riley & Son (E) Ltd, the tender wheelsets were refitted to the ‘Caley’ 0-6-0 at the Strathspey Railway on February 16. The locomotive was steam-tested on March 7, and is expected to be back in traffic for the first weekend of the line’s operating season on March 25/26. 80097: The boiler of the Bury Standard 4 Group’s 2-6-4T is awaiting its superheater flue tubes prior to a hydraulic test by Adam Dalgleish Engineering. It is expected to enter service at the East Lancashire Railway this year. 80151: Work on the Bluebellbased ‘4MT’ is focused on the boiler, with the fitting of the new firebox throatplate, preparations being made to remove the firebox wrapper sides for replacement, and marking out for new firebox lap seams. 90775: Gloss painting of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society’s WD 2-10-0 is due to commence on March 26. Only the installation of the brick arch and delivery of piston rings are outstanding before the ex-Greek State Railways engine can be steam-tested and given its Fitness to Run examination. Society Chairman Neil Sharpe would like to hear from a Mr T.K. Goodwin, who sent a donation to the ‘Iron War Horse Appeal’ for No. 90775, but made the cheque out incorrectly. Mr Sharpe can be contacted on 01692 650395 or at nnrneil@btinternet.com 92134: Riveting of the firebox sides is under way on the boiler of the unique surviving single-chimney ‘9F’, following the welding of new sections around the foundation ring, while the mountings for the gauge glasses and regulator have been re-faced. The boiler is being overhauled at Crewe, while the rest of the locomotive is at the East Lancashire Railway, where a running agreement is under negotiation ahead of a possible steaming this year.
