MANCHESTER UNITED FACES UP TO THE CHALLENGE
‘B17’ No. 61662 Manchester United is the latest new-build locomotive to get its ‘face’, with the assembly of the front end at the Mizens Railway in Woking. The North British Locomotive Preservation Group has temporarily fitted the original smokebox door from ‘B1’ No. 61264, acquired from the Thompson B1 Locomotive Trust. However, the smaller inner door ring must be made before the hinges can be permanently fitted. NBLPG Secretary Ken Livermore said: “Our next jobs are to get a chimney cast and to continue with the front footplating. After that we will be appealing to Manchester United fans for further donations to make a start on the frames.”
