SLOW-BURN DEBUT FOR NEWLY RESTORED ‘Q’

-

Newly restored ‘Q’ 4-4-0 No. 131 is expected to make its main line passenger debut with the RPSI’s ‘Easter Bunny’ specials from Belfast to Whitehead on April 2/3. The trips would mark the 1901-built GNR(I) locomotive’s return to revenue-earning service for the first time since 1963 – but it is likely to be restricted to 40mph, pending commissioning of its Train Protection & Warning System and acceptance by NIR. James Friel, the RPSI locomotive running officer, said the Department for Infrastructure in Belfast was poised to grant a derogation to allow the engine to operate at Easter. The next stage will be to secure permission for 60mph running, and the RPSI is aiming to achieve this by May 15, when the 4-4-0 is due to haul the final leg of the ‘Cork & Kerry’ tour. The locomotive was due to be launched at a ceremony in Whitehead on March 24, with Heritage Railway Association President Lord Faulkner of Worcester officiating.
