Then People swarm around the front of Ivatt ‘2MT’ 2-6-2T No. 41241 and ‘USA’ 0-6-0T No. 72 at the head of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway inaugural preservati­on train on June 29 1968. This colourful Keighley scene was captured just weeks before British Rail brought the curtain down on main line steam.

Now Fifty years later, the engine that hauled the Manchester-Carlisle leg of the August 11 1968 ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’ – No. 70013 Oliver Cromwell – departs from the opposite platform on March 10. The signal box from Shipley and Garsdale’s turntable have been relocated to the right (east) of the station since 1968.
