COTSWOLD ‘CROMWELL’ – 70013 TO STAR AT GWSR
Steam Railway readers’ appeal ‘Britannia’ Oliver Cromwell will star at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway’s ‘Cotswold Festival of Steam’. National Collection ‘7MT’ No. 70013 will be making its first visit to the GWSR for the May 26-28 event, and it will be the first time a member of the class has worked over the former Cheltenham Stratford route since BR days. No. 70013 is the third visiting locomotive confirmed for the event, following previously confirmed ‘King’ No. 6023 King Edward II and Churnet Valley Railway-based ‘S160’ No. 5197. It will be second time lucky for the USATC 2-8-0 class on the GWSR in recent years; No. 5197’s classmate and CVR stablemate No. 6046 had been booked to attend last year’s event but had to withdraw at the eleventh hour owing to an overheating big end bearing (see SR468). Because of this, the CVR is letting the GWSR use No. 5197 free of charge. Llangollen Railway-based ‘64XX’ 0-6-0PT No. 6430 will be the fourth guest, and the pannier tank will run with the line’s DMU set. The gala will be the first in which trains will travel over the GWSR’s newly commissioned extension to Broadway, and all of the railway’s current operational steam fleet is expected to be in action.
