Andrew Barclay 0‑4‑0ST Works No. 2369: Formerly based at the Derwent Valley Light Railway, this engine is now under overhaul at the Appleby-Frodingham Railway Preservation Society at Scunthorpe, where its chassis and brake gear are nearing completion. Its boiler will be lifted once ‘Austerity’ No. 22 is outshopped (see below). Hawthorn Leslie 0‑6‑0ST Works No. 3837: Former Stewarts & Lloyds No. 11 moved to the Epping Ongar Railway on April 18, having previously been displayed on an isolated section of track at Isfield station on the Lavender Line. Ownership of the 1934-built locomotive has been transferred to the EOR, along with funds from the Hawthorn Leslie 3837 Preservation Society. An ex-Swanage Railway and Leatherhead water park resident, it has not steamed since 1969. After cosmetic work, it will initially reside on a short stretch of track again, but could be fully restored in the future. Hawthorn Leslie 0‑4‑0ST No. 6 (Works No. 3860): The Middleton Railway has raised enough money to begin boiler work on its exSwanscombe cement works locomotive. A £60,000 appeal was launched last year with the aim of returning it to steam for its 85th anniversary in 2020 (SR465). Sections of both outer firebox sides have been cut out for replacement and discussions with potential contractors are expected to start soon. During the overhaul of the chassis, it was discovered that the 15in cylinders had worked loose and this has been corrected, in addition to straightening the frames. Hunslet ‘Austerity’ 0‑6‑0ST Works No. 2864: This former Strathspey Railway resident arrived at its new home of the Aln Valley Railway on April 19. The 1943-built locomotive is no stranger to Northumberland, having spent almost its entire working life in the county as National Coal Board No. 48, predominantly on the Backworth collieries system. It will initially receive cosmetic attention, with an overhaul expected to commence within the next two years. Kitson 0‑6‑0ST Works No. 5474 Carnarvon: Contractors have repaired a hole in the top of the cylinder block on the Worcester Locomotive Society’s engine at the South Devon Railway, using a cold metal stitching technique. Peckett ‘W5’ 0‑4‑0ST Works No. 1438: After ten years of operation with the Appleby-Frodingham Railway Preservation Society at Scunthorpe, this locomotive bowed out of traffic on April 21, double-heading with Avonside 0-6-0ST Cranford. The latter engine will now haul the society’s trips around the steelworks while the Peckett is overhauled, and Hunslet ‘Austerity’ 0-6-0ST No. 22 (Works No. 3844) is also expected to return to steam later this year. Peckett 0‑4‑0ST Works No. 2142 Northern Gas Board No. 1: Patches have been welded and riveted to the firebox backhead and throatplate of the Darlington Railway Preservation Society’s cut-down ‘W7’ class at North Road. 37 stays must now be replaced in the new sections, after which similar work will be undertaken on to the outer firebox side sheets. It is still hoped that the 1953-built machine will be back in steam this year.
