TYSELEY… UP THERE WITH CONCORDE
Talking of Tyseley, well done to the team for receiving the Engineering Heritage Award, presented by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on September 18.
The institution’s president is none other than Tony Roche – the railway engineer who led the team that developed the prototype HST power cars. He described the plaque awarded as recognising “both the importance of the engineering and the educational aspect of the steam railway depot”.
Among other railway recipients, Tyseley now joins such other things to be recognised as the Harrier aircraft, the Thames Barrier and PS Waverley.
Says TLW Chief Engineer Bob Meanley: “Everyone at Tyseley is thrilled and honoured at receiving this award, as a confirmation, from the highest and oldest mechanical engineering institution in the UK, of the value attached to what we have achieved in building up the works to its current levels and capabilities. It is a tremendous honour to think that our work is professionally considered to merit such an award alongside the Jaguar E-Type, Turing’s Bombe, and
Concorde.”
