1948: BR’S FIRST YEAR

Some of Britain’s most advanced ‘Pacific’ locomotives were introduced towards the end of British Railways’ first 12 months in existence – the Peppercorn ‘A1s’ – engines which could trace their roots to the birth of the LNER a quarter of a century previously.
