If you find ‘Thomas & Friends’ too infantile, the Peter’s Railway series is the perfect tonic. It blends history and engineering with superb storytelling, yet never talks down to its juvenile audience. Christopher Vine has picked up where the Reverend W. Awdry left off and kept the spirit of the original ‘Railway Series’ alive in the 21st century.

The Four Seasons is the latest in the author’s line of paperback volumes, interweaving realistic railway operations with engaging stories – ideal for the long winter nights. Illustrations and diagrams are what really stand out here, and illustrator John Wardle’s work is up to his usual high standard.

The Activity Book is bound to interest children (OK, and adults too) for many a long hour and, as is to be expected, is filled with informative and explanatory diagrams ideal for the budding engineer or enthusiast.

To get change from £10 for both books is good value, and here’s hoping Christopher Vine keeps up the good work. If you have children who love railways, these books – as well as the others in the series – are must-haves. (TB)
