NEVER TO RETURN

-

With reference to your excellent article entitled ‘Found on the Front’ (SR486), I enclose a photograph (right) of a GWR ‘Armstrong Goods’, built at Swindon in 1868, withdrawn in August 1916 and sent to Salonika, along with other members of the class. It never returned to Swindon.

This photograph was taken at Box station by the Rev. Vere Awdry, father of Rev. Wilbert Awdry. The family had moved to Box several years before, and Wilbert Awdry gave me this photograph, along with others taken by his father in the Box area. It’s nice to have a local connection with the First World War from this area of Wiltshire. Michael Rumsey, Chairman, Corsham Civic Society
