• WAGON GETS RIGHT ID
An LMS box van at the Great Central Railway will regain what is thought to be its correct number – 25 years after entering preservation. Acquired from Rosyth Dockyard as part of the Steam Railway-supported ‘Windcutter’ project, it was numbered M501438, but research concluded that it is probably No. M500954, recorded as being disposed of at Inverkeithing near Rosyth.
• YOUNG VOLUNTEER AWARD
South Devon Railway member Josh Connolly has won the line’s ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’ award. He is thought to be preservation’s youngest crossing keeper, having qualified for the job on his 18th birthday.
• BALA BOOM
The Bala Lake Railway welcomed more than 29,000 passengers in 2018. The figure represent a 50% increase since General Manager David Jones joined from the Llanberis Lake Railway in 2014, when it stood at 19,000.
