The photograph by David Wilcock in SR487 is not of ‘Jinty’ No. 47279, but No. 47406. The former had its boiler dome lid in situ when we bought and removed it to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in 1979, and it was parked up against the bufferstops at the end of a long line of other locomotives.

The dome lid of the ‘Jinty’ is missing from David’s photograph. Also, the righthand water tank top does not have the sandbox filler typical of No. 47279 and the first batch of Fowler ‘3Fs’.

In subsequent examples this was relocated to the more typical ‘mousehole’ position at the lower side of the tanks. Finally, the stub of the water level gauge is present on the tank top, but these were not fitted to No. 47279.

By 1979, only two ‘Jinties’ remained at Barry, ours and No. 47406. The latter was eventually bought by Roger Hibbert and superbly restored at the Great Central Railway. Philip Jervis, former co-owner and restorer of No. 47279

I noticed the picture in SR487 of ‘Duchess’ No. 6233 with the ‘York Yuletide Express’. As I also took a picture of this train on the same day, imagine my amazement to find it shown as ‘coasting away from Melton Mowbray’ on a four-track main line, which it never has had; it is twin track and it would not have been coasting as Melton Mowbray was a passenger pick-up!

l It was actually Barrowupon-Soar. Apologies – Ed.

The miniature railway at Brookside Garden Centre has not closed as stated in SR486. What has happened is that the previous owner of the railway has retired and sold the railway to another group, who are continuing to maintain this service, which attracts a lot of people.
