-

A piece of 1967 Southern Region history is being sold to raise funds for 2-6-2T No. 82045 – the chimney from 2-6-0 No. 77014.

The latter ‘3MT’ was the last steam locomotive in use on the Southern Region on July 9 1967. The best offer received for the chimney by September 30 will be accepted, and the minimum bid is £500. Contact Chris Proudfoot on 01928 787255 or chris. proudfoot045@btinternet.com

Stephenson Engineering of Manchester has forged the first motion parts for No. 82045 – the union links and combination levers. 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust engineer Tony Massau said: “Everything else is on order at Stephenson Engineering, it is just down to them as to the order in which they manufacture the various components.” The firm is also producing the brake stretcher pull rods and the reversing shaft.

The main activity at the trust’s Bridgnorth base is the trial assembly of the 2-6-2T’s rear pony truck, with the axleboxes for both trucks having been whitemetalled. The final large casting for the pony trucks – the pivot slide for the front truck – has also been machined.

The locomotive has entered Bridgnorth works, with the steam brake cylinder being the latest component to be fitted.
