Cegin stars at ‘Trangkil 50’ gala
AMONG A stellar line-up, former Penrhyn quarry Andrew Barclay 0-4-0WT Cegin (Works No. 1991) was arguably the star of the show at the Statfold Barn Railway’s ‘Trangkil 50’ event on June 12/13.
Repatriated alongside Hunslet 0-4-0ST Works No. 704 Nesta in April 2016 – the last Penrhyn locomotives to return to the UK – the 1931-built locomotive steamed for the first time in 56 years on June 4, enabling it to join the line-up at the two-day event. Appropriately, Cegin was paired with another former Penrhyn colleague, Avonside 0-4-0T Works No. 2067 Marchlyn – another locomotive exported to the USA in 1965 – throughout the weekend.
Held to mark the 50th anniversary of Hunslet 0-4-2ST Works No. 3902 Trangkil No. 4 – the last steam locomotive built in Britain for commercial use – the event also featured George England 0-4-0STT Prince, visiting from the Ffestiniog Railway and representing the opposite end of the spectrum in being Britain’s oldest working narrow gauge locomotive.
Also making their debuts at Statfold were recently restored standard gauge Hunslet 0-6-0ST Hastings (SR519) and 2ft gauge Bagnall 0-4-2T Works No. 3023 ‘Isaac’ – the latter hauling its first public trains since its move from the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway in February and subsequent acquisition by the Statfold Narrow Gauge Museum Trust.
Visitors could also see progress on the extension to create a complete loop around the site, and a new ‘Quarry Hunslet’ under construction for a private customer, while recently acquired Handyman was on display in the roundhouse (see story, right).
