The auction got off to a good start as Lot 1, brass nameplate Ajax, ex-45689, went for £9,200.

There were soon five-figure hammer prices to follow with British Guiana (45601) reaching £15,000, Codrington (45676) at £10,000, Madras (45575) at £12,200, Malay Estates (45615) at £14,000, Punjab (45579) at £11,600, Raleigh (45639) at £10,000, Uganda (45636) at £10,100 and Western Australia (45568 – pictured) at £12,000.

Following the sale of the nameplates came a selection of ‘Jubilee’ BR cast iron smokebox numberplates, with the top prices in this section going to 45611 (ex-Hong Kong) at a hammer price of £6,200, a price subsequently equalled by 45742 (ex-Connaught).

The next section in the sale featured five alloy steam locomotive headboards with the top hammer price of £6,000 being paid for ‘The Thames Clyde Express’.

Of the non-‘Jubilee’ smokebox numberplates, the example from ‘4P’ 2-6-4T No. 42509 (ex-locomotive with handwritten allocation details on the rear) reached £1,300.

Among the cast iron shedcode plates from the collection, a restored 3B Bushbury made £650, with 66A Polmadie not far behind at £620.

In addition to the main collection, a few additional ex-‘Jubilee’ nameplates were also included in this sale. One of these, Lot 3 Australia, ex-45563, was the first of the nameplates in the auction to reach five figures with a hammer price of £10,000. Other non-collection nameplates sold included Barham (45653) at £8,600 and Beatty (45677) at £8,000. www.ukrailwayana.com
