‘O1’ 65 goes main line for East Grinstead bridge opening

-

EX-SOUTHERN EASTERN & Chatham Railway ‘O1’ No. 65 ventured onto the main line for the first time since 1961 on September 2, to help celebrate the opening of a new accessible footbridge at East Grinstead main line station.

The 1878-built 0-6-0 hasn’t worked on the main line since it was withdrawn from Dover Marine shed on June 24 1961. However, it was given special permission by Network Rail to venture onto national network metals under its own power, via the Bluebell Railway’s main line connection at East Grinstead, so that it could attend the ceremony. This marked the completion of the £4.65 million footbridge and lifts, making the NR platforms accessible to all. In addition, a plaque was also unveiled in memory of campaigner Eric Mackie MBE, who set up the East Grinstead Access Group and dedicated his life to improving access for people with mobility issues.

Bluebell Railway Preservation Society vice president Roy Watts said: “The Bluebell is delighted to be invited to be part of this important event and, indeed, unique occasion honouring a local resident. The Bluebell looks forward to welcoming more passengers by Southern, especially as access has been made even easier by this new footbridge.”

It is the second time a Bluebell Railway-based SECR 0-6-0 has been on the main line in recent years: ‘C’ class No. 592 – along with a mixed rake of SECR four-wheel and bogie coaches and Maunsell stock – went to King’s Cross as part of a filming contract for Warner Bros in February 2016.
