MORE RECORDS BROKEN AND A BIG CHOICE OF STATION TOTEMS
GW RAILWAYANA Auctions began the year with a fresh set of record breakers in their two-day sale held on March 10 and 11.
In fact, they were into recordbreaking figures even before the sale began, with a total of 106 BR enamel station totem signs entered in this auction, which raised a total of £130,130.
There was a strong selection of totems from across the regions, including some rarities. North Eastern Region tangerine and white signs did especially well on this occasion. Lot 455 Saltburn sold for a hammer price of £4,500, while £4,100 was paid for a Malton example. Apperley Bridge made £4,000 and Seamer reached £3,200.
The second most successful category was steam-era nameplates, with nine entered and sold. An outstanding example was Lot 575 Holkham Hall, ex-GWR Collett ‘Hall’ Class No. 6926, that sold for a hammer price of £13,000. The total price, including buyer’s premium, took the figure to £15,340 gross – top price for a ‘Hall’. The plate sold is identified as the lefthand example with the right-hand nameplate owned by the Holkham Hall Estate in Norfolk. Another class record was broken with Lot 413 BR cast iron smokebox numberplate No. 46114 ex’Royal Scot’ 4-6-0 Coldstream Guardsman that sold for a hammer price of £7,100. The numberplate was lightly face-restored with a weld to one end. GWRA’s next live online only railway memorabilia and railwayana auction is to be held on July 14 and 15, with some items already previewed on their website. Meanwhile, a timed auction will begin on Monday May 1, finishing on Sunday May 14.
