ELR launches two appeals for urgent repairs to viaduct and locomotive works

-

THE EAST Lancashire Railway has launched two separate appeals to help fund vital repairs to its historic locomotive works at Bury and Higher Woodhill Viaduct near Burrs.

The railway has passed the first phase application stage for grants of £1,000,000 to go towards repairing the viaduct, and £2,000,000 for the repairs to the roof of its Grade II‑listed 1856‑built Baron Street works. However, to secure these grants, the railway needs to demonstrate it can provide a degree of matchfunding, to which end the ELR has launched appeals to raise £50,000 towards the viaduct, and £75,000 for the locomotive works.

The viaduct, situated in Burrs Country Park near Bury, last received major repairs in 1932, while the works roof has deteriorated to the point where netting is being installed inside the roof to protect staff and volunteers.

ELR chairman Mike Kelly said: “As well as our trains, the track, the signals, the tunnels and bridges are all part of the immaculately preserved history that our visitors love so much. It is right that the trains get most of the attention, but in truth they’re only part of the overall picture.

“At this vital time, we need as many people as possible to show us their support. We have an online fundraiser where every single pound donated will make a difference. Added to that, every visitor’s comment about the beauty, history and authenticity of the railway will also support the case for this restoration project.”
