Anti-fraud action at bank welcome

Device fitted after skimming attempts

- Gareth Jones

A new device has been fitted at a Dunblane cash machine to help keep fraudsters at bay.

Dunblane Community Council has been campaigning for anti-skimming devices to be fitted on ATM machines in the town, after they were targeted nine times in the last 18 months.

And now they have welcomed the news that the Bank of Scotland in the High Street, has fitted the technology, which prevents criminals from being able to tamper with the machines to gain the card details of customers, to its ATM.

Chairman Terence O’Byrne said: “We are pleased to see that the Bank of Scotland has taken measures to improve the security of its ATM with the installation of a more secure anti-skimming device.

“However, we are not at all happy with the response the Royal Bank of Scotland which makes no commitment at all for Dunblane regarding ATM security.

“We will be writing to them expressing our ongoing concerns. We will leave it up to Dunblane residents to decide which ATM they feel more secure in using.”

A spokeswoman for the Bank of Scotland said that customers should still be vigilant when using any cash machine.

She said: “Customers of any bank who use an ATM that they think has been affected by a skimming or card entrapment device should contact their local branch so arrangements can be made for them to be refunded. If anyone sees anything suspicious on any ATM they should advise the branch in question immediately.”

The Royal Bank of Scotland has said it had only one confirmed fraudulent incident at the branch in the past 12 months, that changing the machine may not prevent further incidents and that even the most up-to-date ATM models are not completely fraud proof.
