Cameron receives his Florida trophies

-

A Dollar Academy drummer has finally been united with his trophies from Florida Highland Games.

Stirling Provost Mike Robbins was appointed as Chieftain of the Games at the annual Dunedin Highland games in Florida in April, due to the strong links between the City of Stirling and Dunedin.

He learned from the organisers that a local lad from Stirling was in the drumming competition.

Dollar Academy pipe band drummer, Cameron McCall (14) scooped the prize in Grade 2 with a performance of his March Strathspey and Reel ( MSR) set, whilst on Easter holiday with his family in the southern-most state.

He had to leave before the end of the day and only found out afterwards that he had also won the “Drummer of the Games” title, as well as his category.

He missed the prizegiving and the opportunity to have the trophies presented by his local Provost of Stirling.

The Provosts’ office, however, kindly arranged a meeting recently, at which the Provost presented the trophies to Cameron in person.

The Dunedin Highland Games, Florida, is an annual event hosting dozens of Pipe Bands and scores of solo performers drawn from the south east and upper southern states of the USA.

The local Middle and High School of Dunedin have three bands ( the Highlanders) at various age groups and regularly win events in North America. Cameron also visited a practice morning of The City of Dunedin Pipe Band, an ensemble making its way up the Grades, having recently been promoted.

They hope to visit Scotland for the World Championships in 2016 and will stay in Stirling, the sister city, during their preparations.
