Speed review call for Easter Cornton

-

Dear Editor Perhaps the politicians and powers that be should pop over the railway bridge and assess the current speed limits in the Easter Cornton area now that general speed limits are being reviewed in Cornton.

In what other housing estates (apart from the Easter Cornton Causewayhead and school vicinity of course) do speed limits increase from 20mph to 30 mph the further one travels into the residential area?

The excuse I have been given is that money would need to be spent on traffic-calming measures to apply 20mph throughout the area. Not true as the regulations have been changed which allow 20mph zones to be applied without such measures being taken.

Residents need to be made aware of this as many were against the original 20mph proposals a few years ago as they did not like such impediments being sited near their houses.

I have obtained official statistics that show over 50 per cent of traffic on Easter Cornton Road (including heavy lorries and coaches) exceed the speed limits applicable. A recent case of a two-car crash ‘write off’ within the 20 mph sets the scene I think.

Regardless of this, cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh are applying blanket 20mph zones so will Stirling politicians and powers-that-be follow?

The likely lack of effective speed limit enforcement does not negate the need for rules of safety to be set. C Campbell Stirling
