BLOWN AWAY

County West slip up in their Hamilton Trophy tie against Renfrewshire

-

Stirling County West bowlers were blown away by Renfrewshire on Saturday on a wet and blustery Borestone green.

In this latest Hamilton Trophy encounter County West failed to get to grips both with the incessant wind and some tricky rinks and lost by 26 shots.

The result, with just two qualifying matches remaining, leaves Stirling County tied in second place with three other teams all on six points.

With Glasgow West undefeated and likely to qualify, the race is still on to secure second qualifying spot beginning this Saturday when County West take on local rivals Clackmannan and Kinross at Alloa East End BC.

After the opening five ends at Borestone there was just one shot in it as both teams struggled to master the difficult conditions.

By the halfway mark scores were still evenly balanced but five ends later Renfrewshire West had eased away and led by 15 shots.

Over the final few ends the gap gradually widened with the visitors crossing the finishing line with five winning rinks.

County’s only success came from Daniel McCann, David McEwan Sen, Dougie Kerr and Gary Malcolmson.

Charlie Gibson, Duncan Angus, Aaron Hazel and David Stewart lost 19-16 to S McLellan, while Ian Forsyth, Craig Watson, Pat Martin and Danny McCormick were pipped 17-15.

Garry Brown, Billy Guy, David McEwan Jun and Jason Williams lost 28-19 to Johnathon Ross with Manny Cruz, David McKean, Willie Black and Bryan Stillie adrift of Derrek Moffat 28-18.

Completing the line up were Lee McCormack, George Young, Kenny Murdoch and Sandy Deans who lost 26-16 to Sandy Wotherspoon. Totals: Stirling County West 104, Renfrewshire West 130.

For Saturday’s penultimate match against Clackmannan and Kinross at Alloa East End BC, three rinks remain unchanged - those skipped by D Stewart, G Malcolmson and J Williams.

The other three rinks are: M Cruz, G Young, K Murdoch, S Deans (skip); B Stillie, C Watson, D McCormick, P Martin (skip); I Forsyth, D McKean, D Ferguson, W Black (skip).
