Alick on the bridge

Couple enjoy special day

- Gareth Jones

A former deckhand had a grand day out on board the ship he used to sail on.

Alick Morrison brought a series of pictures of the SS Walter Scott into the Observer offices after he spotted a feature we had published on the 155 yearold steamship in April.

The images featured shots of the ship when Alick worked on board in 1953- including the Queen of Tonga’s voyage and of Captain Donald MacKinnon, who followed in his father’s footsteps by skippering the boat.

And consequently members of staff at the SS Walter Scott invited Alick (78) and his wife for a day out on Loch Katrine. David MacDonald said: “On seeing the photos in the Observer we thought it would be good if we could give Alick and his wife Marion a day out on the loch to reminisce about all the good times. They were picked up by Tam Allan, captain of the ship, and taken to Loch Katrine. They then enjoyed a two hour sail to Stronachlacher and back in beautiful sunshine. On return they were driven back to Bannockburn, where they both acknowledged they had a fantastic day and were well looked after. We hope the memories stay with them both for many years to come.”

Alick, said he had loved spending a year on the ship, although it was hard work keeping it fit for a Queen when he worked on it.
