Athletics

In the recent, Scottish Schools Relay Championships, Balfron High entered 10 teams and six of them made their finals.

The Over 17 boys team of Tom Chandler and triplets Ben, Jonathan and Lewis McGuire, last year’s record holders, retained their Scottish title.

The S2 girls, Anna Cameron, Rebekah Cowan, Laura McKenzie and Elizabeth Thompson, won bronze medals.

The S1 girls also ran well and narrowly missed bronze medals.

Mrs Robertson would like to thank all the athletes who took part.

Despite wet conditions at Grangemouth on Saturday, school athletes put in some great performances in the Scottish Schools Pentathlon Championships.

Tom Chandler won the Over 17 boys event and his brother Matt took the silver medal in the under 15 category, with Matthew Meredith a meritable eighth in the same event.

Anna Cameron fought the conditions to win the long jump and 800m, taking the bronze medal and missing silver by one point.

Anna and Matt now have the chance of representing Scotland in December.

A group of talented young athletes have been selected to represent Forth Valley in an inter- area athletics match.

They are Anna Cameron, Rachel Methven, Mathew Meredith and Matt Chandler.

Duke of Edinburgh

A huge congratulations to all pupils who have completed the expedition section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s bronze award.

The pupils were assessed on Monday night, when they had to complete a presentation on their aims of the expedition as well as discuss the challenges encountered and how they overcame them.

The qualifying expedition, which was held on the weekend of June 6-7, involved several groups navigating through the Carron Valley Forest, over the Campsie Hills and spending a night wild camping.

The conditions were challenging on Saturday, with high winds and heavy rain and the teams worked extremely well setting up camp and cooking a meal before retiring for a well earned sleep.

Sunday was warmer and sunnier and the teams enjoyed pleasant conditions as they completed the final stage of their walks.

Pupils have to complete a volunteering, skills and physical activity section, as well as the expedition, in order to receive the award and many of the groups were already looking forward to starting the silver award.

Head Prefects 2015-16

This week head prefects for 2015-16 were chosen after a two-day selection process.

The panel was extremely impressed with the quality of interviews and presentations the candidates delivered.

After much discussion the following applicants were appointed: Head Boy - Ciaran Hamilton 5C1; Head Girl - Erin Sanderson 5C3; Deputy Head Boy - Cal Clark 5E1; Deputy Head Girl - Taylor Craig 5C3.

The John Muir Award

In collaboration with the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Woodland Trust and National Trust for Scotland, S3 pupils have visited four different areas of the park.

In so doing, they have studied how numerous organisations manage it and the challenges it brings.

The John Muir Award gave the young people the opportunity to explore the wildlife and woodland and to take a boat out to Inchcailloch to visit the Nature Reserve.

They looked at issues such as the camping ban and investigated the geography and geology of the National Park.
