STIRLING FIELD AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY

Last year the society sought more hands-on activities and began the exploration of the site once occupied by Craigend Distillery near Auchenbowie. Very little remains above ground, but there is a contemporary plan of the distillery and in the first season the society was able to confirm its accuracy in some respects. This year members will continue by looking at the mill lade and other parts of the mill. Non-members are welcome to come along and take part but are asked to telephone first so the society knows what experience they have. Everyone should meet outside the Smith Museum at 9.30am. Stout shoes and clothes appropriate to the weather are recommended, together with either a spade, shovel or trowel if possible. Leader: Paul Sorowka 01786 464578.

STIRLING ROTARY CLUB

President David Paterson welcomed members to the annual club assembly. Members approved a council recommendation to offer funding to CHAS, the children’s hospice charity and to Milton FC. President David and the conveners commented on the year gone by and the latter outlined their plans for 2015/16. Incoming president Peter Mehta recited a poem he had written about the conveners and their committees, and this was well received. He went on to describe his vision for the future, which he classi- fied under three headings: Continue to play a part in contributing to the community; growing the membership; attracting younger members. Earlier, over the weekend of May 2931, the club held one of its major fund raising events at Gardening Scotland, principally in aid of Scottish Charity Air Ambulance based at Scone. A substantial four-figure sum was raised, representing a considerable achievement, as the weather conditions over the period were wet, windy and cold. Highlight of the weekend’s fundraising was the annual visit to the Stirling Rotary stand of Beechgrove Garden’s Jim McColl, who tried his hand at winning the star prize, a meal for two at Gleneagles Hotel. Heartfelt thanks go to Gleneagles Hotel, Blair Drummond Safari Park and Briarlands Farm for their prize donations and to all Rotarians and partners for their help under adverse. This week’s speakers host is Alan Bradshaw with visitors host Sandy Morrison. More information and news about the club can be found on the website www.stirling.rotary1010.org.

The day had been a great success and convenor John Kilby thanked all members and helpers for their hard work. President Peter Farr welcomed visiting Rotarian Alistair Spowage from Alloa Rotary Club who is Assistant Governor elect for the area. Before getting down to the business of club assembly, President Peter made two well-deserved Paul Harris Fellowship awards to Past President Lawrie Orr and Secretary Iain Fraser. The awards were in recognition of both members long and dedicated service and they were congratulated by all members present. Club assembly was presented by President-elect Mary Fraser who outlined her aspirations for the new Rotary year which starts on July 1. She then invited each of the chairs of next year’s committees to present their plans for the year. One notable statistic to emerge was that during the year, more than £32,000 had been collected and disbursed to a wide range of good causes, including Strathcarron Hospice, CHAS, Parkinson’s UK, ChildLine, ShelterBox as well as many smaller donations to local causes.
