Bond spoof is real blast

-

Kingsman: The Secret Service (15)

Boisterous, bonkers and often brilliant, Kingsman is another triumph for Brit director Matthew Vaughn.

Colin Firth has a blast as a suave, old school Bond-type and newcomer Taron Egerton engages throughout.

The otherwise entertaining comic adaptation is let down, though, by an overbaked climax.

The Interview (15)

A case of all hype and no substance. The Interview may have upset North Korea but other viewers will just be bored.

James Franco and Seth Rogen make for a tiresome pair in an exercise in bad taste.

It wouldn’t be so bad if the film was funny, but while the odd laugh is thrown up, there’s far too much focus on action.

Mortdecai (12)

Oh dear; Johnny Depp is in danger of entering career free-fall as this dreadful spy spoof follows muchderided turns in The Lone Ranger, Transcendence and Into the Woods.

Mortdecai is like watching 90 minutes worth of deleted scenes that weren’t classed as good enough for use in an Austin Powers flick.

The plot — and I use that term loosely — sees Depp’s nobleman recruited by MI5 and bizarre goings-on involving Nazi gold and a lost Goya painting.

More farcical than funny, the culture clashes and randy behaviour belong in a bygone era.

Depp is an embarrassment but only a quirky Jeff Goldblum stands out among a starry cast that includes Ewan McGregor and Gwyneth Paltrow.
